The soprano Margaret Gale, who enjoyed much success with Sadler’s Wells Opera in the 1960s and 1970s, has died, aged 93. She was seen in such familiar parts as Musetta, Adele, Despina, Saffi (The Gypsy Baron) and Clorinda (La Cenerentola).
For other opera companies she was able to perform in such new works as Daniel Jones’ The Knife, Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring, and she created the role of Natalie in John Joubert’s Under Western Eyes. In the 1969 Proms, she performed in Wilfred Mellers’ Yeibichai, scored for coloratura soprano, chorus, jazz trio and jazz singer with the Scottish National Orchestra under Sir Alexander Gibson.
